Infection Control and Sterilization

We use single-use medical devices that do usually not heat tolerant and cannot be reliably cleaned, disinfected, or sterilized. They may be made of plastic. According to the Food and Drug Administration’s (FDA’s) guidance entitled Labeling Recommendations for Single-Use Devices Reprocessed by Third Parties and Hospitalsexternal icon, “a single-use device, also referred to as a disposable device, [is] intended for use on one patient during a single procedure. It is not intended to be reprocessed (cleaned, disinfected/sterilized) and used on another patient.

Examples include syringe needles, blades, celluloid strips. Certain items (e.g., prophylaxis angles, saliva ejectors, high-volume evacuator tips, and air/water syringe tips) are commonly available in a disposable form. They should be disposed of appropriately after each use. Single-use devices and items (e.g., cotton rolls, gauze, and irrigating syringes) for use during oral surgical procedures should be sterile at the time of service.
